Dynamic History Maps: The Black Death
The Black Death did not only strike Britain, or indeed Europe. It was a world wide pandemic, as this sequence shows very clearly.

Dynamic History Maps combine maps and a timeline to provide a framework for animations, images, and interactive text boxes. They provide a visual context and really help engage students with the topic.
The Maps have 2 main functions:
- to act as a presentation tool for teachers, and
- as a depth-study resource for individuals or groups of students.
Presentation Mode

shows the first frame of the sequence of maps. It puts the situation in context for the frames to follow. You can use buttons to turn Trade Routes and Place Names on or off.

shows the final frame, with the extent of the Plague now being seen, giving pupils a visual overview of the topic. Teachers Notes provide a crib for the maps explaining what was happening in each frame.
Depth Study Mode

Fig. 3 shows 'information points' and related information boxes. These give a new dimension to the product, allowing students to interact with the map to bring up information at specific places or years. Information in the boxes includes causes and ways the plague spread, personal or township accounts of the effects, or they follow specific strands of information such as the effects on working conditions and wages.
Fig 4 shows an image, helping students to get more of an idea of scenes that were occuring.
